Active Retrieval
Testing beats rereading; rereading creates an illusion of fluency.
Why it works
Searching memory strengthens the trace more than re-exposing the information. Rereading feels easy, which is exactly why it misleads.
How to practise
- 1Close the material before trying to remember — always.
- 2Write down everything you can retrieve, from blank.
- 3Only then check and mark what was missing.
- 4Retest only what was missing, the next day.
7 min of practice
Most common mistake
Checking the answer before making the effort to remember; without effort there is no gain.
What the evidence shows
The testing effect is one of the most replicated findings in learning psychology, with a clear long-term retention advantage.
