Mindful Encoding

Most “forgetting” was never memorised. Narrate out loud as you store.

Why it works

With no attention at the moment information comes in, there is no trace to retrieve later. What we call forgetting is usually an encoding failure, not a storage one.

How to practise

  1. 1Before putting something away, pause two seconds and say out loud what you are doing: “I am putting the keys in the kitchen drawer”.
  2. 2Look at the object and at the place at the same time, forming a single image.
  3. 3Drop the second task: never store something while replying to a message.
  4. 4At the end of the day, try to retrieve three things you put away and where they are.

5 min of practice

Most common mistake

Trying to “improve memory” by training retrieval when the problem is at the input stage.

What the evidence shows

Dual tasks consistently lower later recall, even when people believe they were paying attention.

Apply it to your day

Use it for keys, documents, medication and where you parked.
